Over the last couple of years, I have seen many products, services, sites and marketing systems come and go. Each week I get the question, “How Can My Website Make Money?”

Let’s review a few basics, so I can point out what I feel is the #1 Tip that will answer the “How Can My Website Make Money” question.

Basics #1: Stop thinking there are shortcuts. You must invest the time to develop your online marketing skills. If not you will continue to run after the next hot thing, you will wast your money and time. Or, you can outsource to someone who knows what they are doing. It may cost a little upfront but worth it in the long run when you find the right people.

Basics #2: Do you feel you have a great product or service? It doesn’t matter if people cannot find you on the Internet. While developing your online skills you will learn how to position your content in front of your target market. This, in itself, is a skill and art that must be learned.

Basics #3: Here is what you need the most that is the #1 tip…without traffic you will not make money. Hence, the first thing you need is to get some traffic to your website if you want to make money. Not just any traffic but targeted traffic.

Most people have problems trying to figure out how to get traffic. If you fully understand your target market you really should not have a problem with traffic.

However, there is an obstacle that will rear its ugly head. If you continue to fall for hype you will lose a lot of money. How many times must people promise you the world, take your money and not deliver before you wake up?

The best way I know to find out if a product or service is good is to get targeted traffic to the page it’s on. Then you will see if you have a success product/service or a dud. If you have a dud then something had to be improved.

You could use one or all of the following. Keep in mind I cannot go into detail on these in this post.

1. Adwords (costly if you do not know what you’re doing)
2. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
3. Social Networking
4. Videos
5. Article Marketing
6. Viral Products
7. Classified Ads
8. Social Bookmarking
9. And much more

As you can see there are many ways you can use to get your website to make money. Yet, you have to pick the method that matches your target market preferences. In other words, will article marketing help you to reach your target market?

One other thing, if you have problems clearly defining who your target market is, what they do, like or dislike as well as not knowing where they tend to congregate you are wasting your time online.

At the end of the day, the answer to, “How Can My Website Make Money” is tied to you getting targeted traffic to your site to see if you have the products or services people will want to buy.

There’s a whole lot more but focus on the traffic. It will make your life a whole lot easier.
