As a business owner, would you like know the 4 things that reveal if your website sucks? You may say, “Yes” but keep in mind you may have spent thousands of dollars to get it developed. So, you may not take to kindly to my comments.
Let’s see if your website sucks:
Your webiste sucks if…You are not getting targeted traffic
There is this belief that if you build a website they (traffic) will come. That is not true! You have to know before you put up your website how you plan to get traffic to it. This involved developing, at the very least, a simple marketing plan.
Plus, you want targeted traffic from your potential customers not random traffic that accidentially found you but not interested in your products or services.
A good SEO Marketing Consultant could assist you to develop a strategy to get targeted traffic to your site. However, there is one area website owners have an issue with….they usually want results now!
Let me be honest with you, if you want instant traffic then you have to pay for it. This involves using PPC (PayPerClick) advertising and a host of other things. This requires a certain skillset. If you do not have it you can waste a lot of money fast!
If you are not interested in paying for traffic then you need to learn to be a little patient. Otherwise, you will end up with a web site that will look pretty but not get results because your SEO Marketing Consultant will cut you loose.
Personally, I do not deal with businesses/people who are impatient. They did not become proficient in their trade and skills overnight, so why should they expect grandiose results overnight with no real effort put in?
Everything done onlin and offline has a process. You must allow the pepole you hired to work that process to get you the result you desire (if they are honest).
I can recall two sites I put up…one in December 2006 and another in January 2009. The older site was put up and left alone and has not been touched since. It averages about 10 unique visitors a day and I convert 4-5 of them into subscribers.
The other site is brand new and gets about 1 to 2 unique visitors a day but I have not put up any “real” content on the site and visitors are taking the action I desire by clicking on the rotating images and
the adsense. Yep, I’m testing something on this site.
My point is if you allow your site to do what is was designed to do (if you had a good SEO Marketing Consulstant helping you) coupled with a few things you could do in your place of business you will get targeted traffic.
Your Website Sucks if…You are not making money
I had a potential client who was a Lawyer. As we were close to finalizing the details he asked, “How much money you think I could make from my website?” I replied, “I don’t know as it depends on many variables of which I nor you do not control.”
He wasn’t happy with my response and begin to back out of the arrangement. At that time I said to him, “How did you know you how much money you would be making today?” He stared at me and did not like it.
I said, “You didn’t know how much money you would make because it depended on the number of clients you got and how much you make from each settlement or fees.”
When I explained to him that his website will serve as a salesperson for his service, working 24-hours/7-days a week to get potential customers for him and it was his responsibility to close them his face turned red.
That’s when he asked me, “Then why am I going to pay you all this money when I could get it done cheaper if you won’t guarantee me xxx amount of money?” I replied, “I can only guarantee I will do what I do to position you in front of your target audience. The rest is up to you once they call.”
To this day he still has his old web site and I recently got an email asking if I would be interested in coming back in to talk with him again. I replied, “Sorry, I am not taking on any more clients. I will gladly put you on my waiting list.” Yes, I am that busy!
At the end of the day, you need a site that will direct people to take your desired action. Not everyone can do this. It requires some skill and art too! It doesn’t matter if your site looks pretty when it cannot produce leads and/or sales.
If you can find someone who can create a Direct Response Website to help you generate leads and make sales hold on to them for life as they will, overtime, make you much more money than you have spent with them.
Your website sucks if…It’s difficult to navigate
When a person visits your site can they find the information they are looking for? If you make it difficult for them they will leave. Your navigation has to be so simple and intuitive that a 5-year old could get around your site.
For example, if you visit the Google homepage (www.google.com) what do you see? A big search box in the middle and a handfull of links. When you go there the focus is on “searching.”
When you visit Craigslist what do you see? A bunch of descriptive links to various sections. As busy as their page is you can easily find what you are looking for as everything is broken down into categories.
Your job is to make your visitor’s life easy. Your job is to know exactly what they want and make sure they easily find it with one to two clicks of the mouse.
Your website sucks if…It only talks about you and your company
When you visit your favorite store to food shop or to buy clothes are you interesed in knowing about the company? Or, are you interested in learning more about their products and services and how it will benefit you?
Then why is it so many people and businesses have an ego-driven website that talks about the company?
Let’s go back to the Lawyer I mentioned above.
He is a Personal Injuary Lawyer who had a lot of content about his law firm and how good they are and everything else under the sun about them.
When I asked him, “Why should I use you instead of the guy down the street” he gave me the evil look.
I told him, “That’s what your visitors will be thinking, so you have to answer that question by showing how they will benefit from using you.” He didn’t get it. So, I gave him the following example of what he could put on his site to increase visitor response.
“We have helped clients over the past 20-years to get the settlements they deserved from companies who did not want to pay utilizing our polished negotiation skills and vast knowledge of the legal system. Our clients can focus on living their life, having fun and enjoying the time with their family.”
Yeah, it’s simple but he couldn’t get it! He just wanted to talk about his company, how good they are, all of the awards they received, etc. without showing how the client would benefit.
At the end of the day, you must understand why people would be looking for your business, what issues and problems they may have and if you have a solution to help them solve it.
People always want to know (WIIFM), “What In It For Me?” You tell them and they will be more inclined to do business with you.
After reading this, do you feel the 4 Things Revealed If Your Website Sucks has opened your eyes a little about your website? In my opinion, approximately 85% of the websites on the Internet suck. Yet, the owner is not aware of it and wondering why they are not generating business!
There is so much more but these four items will get you started on the right path.
Until next time!
Take care, be safe and stay blessed.
